Odisha: Retired Army doctor chops his wife into 300 pieces; gets life imprisonment

A retired Army doctor has sentenced life imprisonment on Tuesday after he murdered and chopped in his wife in Bhubaneswar in 2013.

Khurda District and Sessions Court judge Loknath Mohapatra sentenced Somanath Parida after convicting him for the murder of his wife, government pleader RR Barhma said.

The former Army doctor has been convicted based on circumstantial evidence as there was no eyewitness.

Parida killed his 62-year-old wife Ushashree Parida on June 3, 2013. After seven years, the court pronounced its decision into the matter.

Nayapally police arrested the accused Parida on June 21, 2013, who brutally murdered his wife.

According to the media reports, the case came to light when the deceased daughter, who is living abroad, tried to contact her mother over the phone and she didn’t respond. She also insisted on her father to give the phone to her mother, which he refused.

Later, the daughter sent a relative to the house in the IRC village area to enquire.

The relative, in turn, informed the police after suspecting that a woman could have been murdered.

During the investigation, Police found around 300 pieces of the body which kept in a separate steel container. The Police had seized a chopper, a knife and two cutters from the spot.

"I am innocent and did not kill my wife," he said outside the court while being taken to judicial custody.
