'Became difficult to keep count after 50 murders', says 62 year-old doctor who was nabbed in Delhi

An ayurvedic doctor who allegedly murdered more than 50 people in Delhi and adjoining states was taken into custody in the national capital on Wednesday, stated the police. The 62-year-old had been lying low at Delhi’s Baprola after skipping parole in January.

According to the police he could’ve been involved in more than hundred murder cases, however an precise number is still unknown as many cases have been lodged against him in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan.

62-year-old Devender Sharma, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, hails from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. According to the police Sharma was declared guilty in several cases of murder and kidnapping. Earlier, he was also arrested for running a fake gas agency in UP and was also sent to prison for operating an organ trade racket.

"Sharma was serving life sentence in Central Jail, Jaipur in a murder case and was out on parole for 20 days in January this year after spending 16 years in jail. But he jumped parole and stayed at his village for a while before moving to Delhi in early March," a police official said.

"Earlier, he was living at the house of an acquaintance in Delhi's Mohan Garden and later moved to Baprola, where he married a widow. Our team arrested him after we received information about his hideout on Tuesday," DCP (Crime) Rakesh Paweriya said.

He had come to the national capital with an intent to start fresh and also married his distant relative who was aware of his misdeed, said the police official. He started a property dealing business and was currently negotiating the sale of Marshal House in Connaught Place, said the cop.

His probing that began on Tuesday went on till morning the next day. According to the police he remained calm and cooperated with the investigating team, disclosing everything about his involvment in many cases.

In the time of interrogation, the confessed to being the mastermind in more than 50 murders, the police stated. He was taken into custody for several murders between 2002 and 2004, but was sentenced in only seven cases. His kids and wife left him in 2004 after they found out about is misdeeds.

Devender Sharma told the police that he lost count after 50 murders and it became difficult for him to remember the exact number of the murders he had committed.

After getting his Bachelor degree from Bihar’s Siwan, he set up a clinic in Jaipur in 1984. In 1992, he put in 11 lakh in a gas dealership scheme but he was duped and had to put up with financia crisis. In 1995, he again started a fake gas agency in Aligarh and later got into criminal activities, said the police.

In 1994, he got involved in an interstate kidney transplant racket operating in Jaipur, Ballabhgarh, Gurgaon and many other places. He and many other doctors were taken into custody in 2004 in kidney racket case, said the police.

Between 1994 to 2004, he claimed to have performed over 125 illegal kidney transplants for which he got Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh per case, the police said.

In 2001, Devender Sharma once again began a illegal gas agency at Amroha but was nabbed. Following this case, he went to Jaipur and operated a clinic till 2003. it was during this time he came in contact with his abetter who used to hire taxis to Aligarh and then killed the drivers and dumped their bodies in crocodile infested waters in Kashganj’s Hazara canal.

"His accomplices robbed trucks carrying LPG cylinders by killing the driver. They unloaded the trucks in his fake gas agency and then the robbed truck would be dismantled in Meerut," the police stated.

In some cases, Sharma sold the taxi at Kashganj and made money from such sale. The Jaipur police have been notified about the arrest and the accused will be handed over to them.
