Anti-CAA Protests: Six dead in UP violence; Latest Updates

Massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act are being reported from across the nation where protesters have clashed with police. Here are the latest updates:

 

Six killed in UP:

Six people were killed in Uttar Pradesh during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act on Friday, officials said. The state police chief confirmed five deaths.

 Director-General of Police O P Singh told PTI that two people lost their lives in Bijnor and one each in Meerut, Sambhal, and Firozabad. But officials reported death in Kanpur as well.

The cause of death would be known after a post-mortem, they said.

In the state-wide protests, there were reports of firing on police parties at various places, officials said.

Police retaliated with teargas shells followed by rubber bullets, they said.

Singh said over 50 policemen seriously injured during the protests.

Priyanka Gandhi meets protesters at India Gate:

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the protesters at India  Gate "Citizenship Act and NRC are against the poor. The poor they will be most affected by it. What will the daily wage labourers do? Demonstrations should be held peacefully," Priyanka said. 

Cops injured in firing by protesters in Meerut:

The ADG Meerut has said that two policemen were injured after the protesters fired at them during a demonstration against the CAA.  

TET exam postponed

TET examination which was scheduled to be held on December 22 has been postponed due to CAA protests in UP.
