In a horrifying incident of crime against women reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Jewar, a 55-year-old woman, who belonged to a dalit community was allegedly raped by four men on Sunday. Reportedly, the accused dragged the woman to a field where they held her at gunpoint and took turns to rape her.
One of the accused, who was taken into police custody on Wednesday, has been identified as Mahendra. The accused was arrested near his village in Jewar by the cops, the Special Operations Group and the SWAT.
"A bounty of Rs 25,000 was announced on information leading to the arrest of Mahendra in the wake of the unfortunate episode in which another person has already been arrested and sent to jail, "a police spokesperson said.
According to a report by The Times of India, after coming to know about the perpetrator, the police filed an FIR under Sections 376D (gangrape), 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than our grave provocation) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, were also added to the FIR.
In line with reports, the accused (Mahendra) has been charged for trespassing and theft in the past. He is the only person named in the complaint. The accused was nabbed after the 55-year-old victim identified him through an image shown to her.
The extremely grim occurrence gave rise to massive outrage among locals in the state and resulted in political dispute. Opposition political parties such as the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) and the Congress attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state and criticized them for not making sure of women safety.
