Suffer from chronic pain? Go back to nature’s own pain killers!

If you suffer from chronic pain you would want your painkillers to be effective and safe to use over a period without any side-effects. Pharmaceutical drugs are often accompanied with varying degrees of side effects. But those are not your only path to pain relief, as natural pain killers from herbal medicines are used increasingly for escaping from pain. There are more than a hundred natural pain killers and keeping the following herbs at home can save you from making frequent trips to the chemist and buying over-the-counter drugs for pain and inflammation.

Ginger, Turmeric, and Holy Basil

Also known to be the trinity in ayurvedic medicine, all these herbs carry anti-inflammatory properties. These herbs are known to alleviate joint and muscle pains, heartburn, inflammation, indigestion, and are really good for health. But taking them in large quantities may cause indigestion, specifically, turmeric.

Feverfew

Feverfew is popular among people who suffer from migraines and has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries. People have reported that after taking it the migraine attacks become less frequent. It is also used for pain relief from stomachaches, toothaches, and even rheumatoid arthritis. Pregnant women should steer clear of feverfew.

Devil's Claw

There has been evidence that this herb from South Africa is effective in managing arthritis and lower back pain. It is also used in alleviating pain and treating health conditions like liver problems and heart burn, and also contains anti-inflammatory properties. It is not advised for pregnant women and those who suffer from ulcers.

Capsaicin

Found in chili peppers, this ingredient does wonders for pain. Capsaicin is a pain-reducing ingredient which temporarily desensitizes the nerve receptors which cause the pain response. A single application of 60-minutes effectively relieves pain for up to 12 weeks. It also diminishes soreness.

Willow Bark

Salicin, the active ingredient found in white willow bark is converted into Salicylic acid by our body. This lowers body's level of prostaglandins, a hormone-like compound that causes aches and pains. It is also helpful for relief from menstrual cramps, muscle pain, arthritis, and pain after hip or knee surgery.
