World's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad is PM Modi's vision: Amit Shah

Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) is developing the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. The stadium is set to open in December 2019 or January 2020 and it can accommodate 1,10,000 people at a time which is higher than Melbourne Cricket Ground’s (MCG) capacity of 100,024 people. MCG is currently the world’s largest cricket stadium.

The stadium will be named after India’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and will have world class infrastructure.

“This project is the vision of our Prime Minister. It was his dream that Gujarat, and India, should have world-class infrastructure in cricket, a game that generates a billion inspirations across the country. We are happy with the way work has progressed and the way the stadium is coming up,” Shah was quoted as saying in an interview with The Times of India (TOI).

Amit Shah who is also the president of Gujarat Cricket Association hailed the stadium and said it will be something India will be proud of. The earlier stadium had a capacity of 50,000 people. The ground has a rich history as it was here back in 1987 that the legendary Sunil Gavaskar scored his 10,000th Test run. Around seven years later, Kapil Dev, the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian captain, broke Richard Hadlee’s record of 431 Test wickets.
