Virat Kohli on the verge of surpassing former Australia captain Ricky Ponting to create world record

Indian skipper Virat Kohli will be on the brink of going past former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and make a world record when he comes out to bat in the upcoming first Test against England. The 32-year-old will be back in action following the paternity leave he had taken after the first Test against Australia, and he would be eager to get off to a flying start.

The first Test which kicks-off on Friday will see Kohli returning back to captaincy in red ball cricket. If the Indian skipper scores a century in the first Test, he would be surpassing Ricky Ponting in the elite list of captains with most international hundreds. It would be Kohli’s 42nd international hundred as captain, the highest by any player in the world.

At present, both Ponting and Kohli are equal at the top spot in the list with 41 centuries.

India will take part in four Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is against the world champions. The men in blue will be going into the series on the back of a thrilling series win in Australia. England on the other hand will be entering the contest after a 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka.

The series will also mark the return of international cricket in India since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The successful hosting of this series will have a huge influence on BCCI's decision of whether it wants to host the upcoming IPL season in India or the UAE.
