Three times when a cricket match was stopped for some weird reason!
In the history of ODI cricket a game was never stopped due to great weather. The incident that took place in Napier today was unprecedented. During the second innings of the first ODI the play was interrupted due to sunlight directly coming into Shikhar Dhawan’s eyes. Let’s go back and visit some of the weirdest reasons that stopped a game of cricket before.
1. Car invaded the ground
During a Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh a man drove his car into the stadium onto the pitch completely ignoring attempts from umpires and players asking him to stop. Thankfully, no one was harmed and the match referee deemed the pitch playable. This was the second security breach at an Indian cricket ground in a span of two weeks.
2. Delayed lunch delivery
During the second Test between South Africa and Bangladesh lunch was delayed by 10 minutes as the delivery of Halal food meant for the visiting team was late because of a wrongly printed menu that was given to the caterers. It barely made any difference as the South African top order continued to smash the Bangladeshi bowlers, conceding 256 runs in the first two sessions.
3. Fire alarm stopped the play
Australia’s domestic cricket team New South Wales needed 18 runs for victory, but had to stop batting for around 30 minutes as a fire alarm sounded at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. Later, it emerged that one of their own players was the cause for the delay. Nathan Lyon, Australia’s star off-spinner had burnt a piece of toast which had prompted fire trucks to arrive at the ground.
