Suresh Raina believes MS Dhoni can still be of use to Indian cricket team

During the time when contrasting suggestions have come form the elites of the Indian cricket fraternity, the uncertainty over MS Dhoni’s participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 still remains in the air. The veteran wicket-keeper batsman is sure to feature in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but not too much can be voiced regarding his international career as yet.

With respect to MS Dhoni’s teammate, Suresh Raina, it’s virat Kohli who needs to reach a decision as to whether the Indian side needs the veteran wicket-keeper back or not.

In an interview with the TOI, Suresh Raina took the lid off numerous strands ranging from his own ambitions to the current ball game in the Indian side. When questioned about his take on if Dhoni should make a comeback to international circuit, Raina without further ado suggested that Dhoni still has a lot to offer to the Indian team.

“Dhoni will probably be coming to Chennai in the first week of March to train ahead of the IPL. Right now, it is so good to see him spending a lot of time with his family. If he wants to leave the game, he will go without making a big fuss. I want to see him continue to play. He is looking fit and has been training hard. I still think the Indian team needs him. But it is Virat's call on how they go forward,” Raina was quoted as saying by TOI.

The 33-year-old also talked about the present situation of the Indian middle order where Shreyas Iyer seems to have made the No.4 slot is own. Having performed while batting at multiple positions during his career, Raina stated that it is important to have the skipper's support while you are new into the system.

“For any newcomer, it is important to get a lot of opportunities. I was lucky to play under Rahul Dravid when I came in. He gave me a lot of opportunities. Then I played under MS Dhoni, who understood my game. When Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) get out, there is so much pressure on the middle-order. You face different situations all the time when you are playing in those slots. I used to believe in myself. The skipper too has an important role to play,” he said.

The wicket-keeper’s spot in the Indian side has seen quite a bit of alterations since the World Cup 2019. while Rishabh Pant was assigned with the responsibility in the limited overs format in Dhoni’s absence, the forthcoming series against NewZealand will see KL Rahul wear the keeping gloves.
