Ravindra Jadeja creates record, surpasses MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev’s mark in illustrious list
It was a familiar scene for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as he once again took team India within touching distance of a famous victory over New Zealand as the Black Caps clinched a thrilling 22-run win in the second ODI at Eden Park on Saturday.
During the 274 runs chase, India were reduced to 129/6, with only Shreyas Iyer going past the 50 run mark. After Iyer’s wicket at 52, Jadeja came to the crease and started to rebuild the chase. He created 24 run stand with Shardul Thakur and 76 run partnership with Navdeep Saini to take the men in blue close to the target.
However, the all-rounder could not guide the team to a series levelling win as India were bundled out for 251. During the match, Jadeja crossed the 50 run mark and scripted an Indian milestone in limited over cricket. This was his seventh fifty while batting at number seven and he went past MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev’s mark in the elite list.
This is New Zealand’s first series win over the men in blue since 2014. the previous three series between the two heavyweights were all won by India (2016, 2017 and 2019).
The final match of the series will be played at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday. Having already lost the series, Virat Kohli led India will be playing for pride in that encounter before the caravan moves on to the longest format.
