Qatar invites India's 1983 and 2011 World Cup winning teams to upcoming FIFA World Cup, know why?
FIFA World Cup is the most watched sports tournament in the world and is popular in countries that doesn’t even qualify for the event. The 2022 edition of the tournament will be hosted by an Asian country, Qatar. No Asian country have won the prestigious trophy till now and Qatar will look to break that jinx.
A senior official associated with the FIFA World Cup has invited members of India’s cricket world cup winning teams of 1983 and 2011. As cricket is a big sport in India, Nasser Al Khater, CEO, FIFA World Cup 2022 extended the invitation to the members of India’s two world cup winning squad.
Nasser Al Khater in an event in Mumbai said, “It is safe to say that this World Cup (in Qatar in 2022) is for all of us to celebrate. I think I have to say, we look forward to welcoming you there (in Qatar).”
“I did not realise how big cricket was in India, so I know that there are some members from the 1983 World Cup winning team, that beat the West Indies, are here (at the awards function), and there are members from the team that won the(cricket) World Cup in 2011. I extend you a special invitation to come and attend the football World Cup in Qatar,” Khater added.
India won the cricket world cup twice, once in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, when it defeated West Indies in England and the other in 2011 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, when it defeated Sri Lanka in India.
