Prithvi Shaw adds new feather into his cap during second Test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval

India’s cricketing prodigy Prithivi Shaw achieved a unique feat during the first day of the second Test against New Zealand at Hagley Ovel on Saturday. Shaw was amongst the three half centurions for the men in blue as they were bundled out for 242 in the first session after Kane Williamson won the toss and dicided to field. Kyle Jamieson was the star among the bowlers as the ended with his first ever five wicket haul.

After is dismal performance in willington, the 20-year-old knocked his first ever overseas Test fifty and just the second half century of his career. In the process, Shaw became the youngest batsman to knock a fifty at Hagley Ovel (20y, 112 days).

Shaw also went on to become the second youngest Indian to knock a Test half-century against the Black Caps after Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar (16y, 293d), who knocked a fifty in Napier in 1990.

Regardless of Shaw’s quality innings, the men in blue remained on the backfoot as New Zealand trailed by just 179 runs in the first innings following Jamieson’s exploits. Playing only his second Test, the right arm bowler wreaked havoc as the visiting team lost their five wickets for 45 runs after the second break.

“It’s a pretty special feeling,” Jamieson said after carrying the ball off the field. “I think as a bowling unit we did so well and I was lucky to grab a few. At one stage I thought they were probably going to get a few more, (the wicket) wasn’t doing quite as much as it did in Wellington, so to keep them to 240 is pretty good.”

New Zealand opener Latham, who was on 27 not-out, and Blundell (29 notout) successfully sustained 23 overs untill stumps and will commence on Sunday.
