On this day in 2011, Virendra Sehwag's 219 runs made a record which is still unbroken

Former Indian cricketer Virendra Sehwag was captain of the team when he hit 219 runs in one-day Internationals against West Indies in 2011. Sehwag achieved this feat on December 8 and became the second international cricketer to score a double-ton after Sachin Tendulkar.

Sehwag is the only cricketer to score a double century as a captain in ODI cricket history. Sehwag’s knock helped India pile up their highest ODI total of 418/5. Sehwag made his ODI debut in 1999 against Pakistan and his Test debut came against South Africa in South Africa. His score became the highest individual score in ODI cricket until Rohit Sharma broke it in 2014 against Sri Lanka. Sharma made 264 off 173 balls. Sehwag’s double century is still the third highest individual score in ODIs.

Sehwag was widely regarded as the most destructive batsman of the world. Sehwag holds multiple records under his name as he also made the fastest triple century in Test cricket against South Africa and the first Indian to do so in Test cricket. Sehwag made a stunning 319 runs in the match.

Sehwag is the only batsman in the history of cricket to score 7,500 plus runs in both ODI and Test cricket as an opener. He has also scored two triple centuries in Test cricket and the only cricketer in the world to take five wickets in the same innings.

Sehwag is also the recipient of Arjuna award, India’s highest sporting award in 2002 and Padma Shree, India’s forth highest civilian award in 2010.
