MS Dhoni on the brink of surpassing RCB’s AB de Villiers in IPL elite list
Former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be seen in action after a 14-month break when his side comes face to face with defenging champions Mumbai Indians in the first match of the Indian Premier League in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. MS Dhoni can make the occasion even more special if he smash a few maximums.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, who already has the record of most sixes by an Indian in the IPL, needs four hits over the ropes to surpass RCB’s AB de Villiers in the IPL six-hitters’ list. Presently, MS Dhoni has 209 sixes in IPL so far, while South African’s AB de Villiers has 212 sixes to his name.
If MSD manages to smash four sixes against Rohit Sharma led MI in the opening match on Saturday, he will go up to second spot in IPL list of batsmen with most sixes, which is currently led by KXIP’s Chris Gayle, who has 326 sixes.
MS Dhoni, who was last seen in action during India’s semi-final defeat to New Zealand in July 2019, announced his retirement from international cricket on 15th August. That however, has had little impact on the wicketkeeper-batsman. He has been in fantastic form which CSK’s Shane Watson and CEO Kasi Viswanathan have described as his best in recent times.
The 39-year-old, who has won three IPLs as CSK skipper also holds the record for most wins in the tournament as captain. He has 104 wins, which makes him only captain to have 100 wins in IPL. Dhoni’s win pecentage 60.11% is the best by a captain with min. 50 matches in the IPL.
