Mohammed Shami comes out in Kohli’s defence, says 'So what, if...'

In recent time, Virat Kohli has come under intense scrutiny, having not scored a ton in international cricket since 22nd November, 2019, when he knocked his 70th century playing against Bangladesh.

A lot of critics have doubted if Kohli's best is past him. However, the run machine got support from teammate Mohammed Shami, who lambasted his critics. "So what, if he (Kohli) has not scored a century. A century doesn't define how big a player he is. It is not that he has not scored runs", said Shami.

"He has scored fifties consistently in the recent past and there is no reason why we should even think like that. A fifty or a sixty is also a score and as long as it is helping the team, there is no reason to complain."

Virat kohli recently bowed out from his role as India’s Test captain after their 1-2 series defeat to South Africa in January.

Earlier, Virat Kohli had stepped down from T20I captaincy and was also removed from the ODI role too. The Indian cricket board announced Rohit Sharma as skipper in limited over cricket in December 2021.

Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, Shami became one of India's leading bowlers along with Jasprit Bumrah. Praising his teammate's leadership, Shami dubbed Kohli as "a bowler's captain".

"Kohli's spiritedness is the best thing and that rubs on to the rest of the team. He is a bowler's captain and always gave us the freedom to express ourselves. He would always take our opinion and ask for options", shami said.

"We have spent so much time together and there are so many memorable moments. It will always remain with me and it is difficult to pick or choose any one such moment", the pacer added.
