Kane Williamson becomes highest run-getter as captain in World Cup history

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson creates history in World Cup as he became the highest run-getter as captain since the tournament’s inception in 1975. Williamson is now the fourth-highest run-scorer in World Cup 2019.

As Williamson took his first run he broke Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena’s record of most runs as a captain in a single edition of World Cup. Mahela scored 548 runs in 2007 World Cup and the former cricketer took 11 innings to achieve the milestone.

The New Zealand skipper took just 10 innings to break that record and become the highest run-scorer in World Cup as captain. The 28-year old batsman scored 30 runs in World Cup final before he was dismissed by England’s Liam Plunkett.

Kane Williamson finished his tournament with 578 runs including two centuries and five 40 plus scores and is behind India’s Rohit Sharma, Australia’s David Warner and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan in runs tally.

Under Kane Williamson’s captaincy, New Zealand won five matches in the preliminary stage and made an exceptional comeback while playing against India in the semi-final. New Zealand is playing their second consecutive World Cup final after they lost against Australia in 2015 World Cup.
