Joe Root shatters Ricky Ponting's long standing World Cup record

England batsman Joe Root created history during the semi final clash against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2019 shattering former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting’s long standing record.

After Joe Root took the catch of Australia’s Pat Cummins, he outstriped the long standing record of most catches by a non wicket keeper in a single edition of the World Cup. With 12 catches to his name, Joe Root surpassed former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting’s record of 11 catches during the 2003 World Cup.

South African skipper Faf du Plessis and England’s Jonny Bairstow stand at number three and four spot with ten and nine catches to their name in the ongoing edition of the World Cup.

At first, England’s terrific bowling attack got better off Australia’s batting after they went to bat first. With Chris Woakes (3/20) and Jofra Archer (2/32) cost Australia losing five wickets with a handful of runs on the board.

Steve Smith displayed a good performance with the bat scoring 85 runs taking Australia to a holdable total. But Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow gave England a highflying start while chasing a paltry total, England achieved the target with 18 over to spare.

England will face New Zealand in the final of the ICC World Cup 2019 at Lord’s on Sunday.
