ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: England sets unwanted record after suffering defeat against Pakistan

After losing to West Indies in their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2019, Pakistan put in a remarkable show against England at Trent Bridge on Monday, the match saw many records being set out of which, one was Australia’s record of most consecutive 300+ total with 6, the host England were 14 runs short while chasing a target of 349 runs.

Pakistan batsmen, who were troubled by the pace and bounce of West Indies in their first match, looked completely different side against England as Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq gave the pakistan team a great start with 82 runs partnership. Babar Azam, Mohammed Hafeez and Sarfaraz Ahmed then went on to score 63, 84, 55 runs, which helped pakistan post 348 on the score board.

England on the other hand, saw their opener Jason Roy depart for just 12 runs when Shadab Khan’s delivery hit his pad for lbw in only the third over. Jonny Bairstow, who had incurred a duck to Imran Tahir in their first clash, managed to score 32 before being removed by pacer Wahab Raiz.

Joe Root who was droped by Babar Azam at the early stage of the match, went on to score 107 but lost two partners in the process, before Jos Buttler also slamed a ton to solidify the team’s chase. Neither Root, nor Buttler managed to stick around till the end as the team finished at 334/9.

Buttler and Root's centuries saw England set an unwanted record as it was the first time in the World Cup history when two batsmen scored a century each, yet saw their side losing.

England, with their 6th successive 300+ team total, are now level with Australia with the most number of such totals. The Aussie side had done it in 2007, while the English have managed to match the same in 2019. Another 300+ score would take Morgan's men ahead of Australia in the list.
