BCCI vs ICC: ICC threatens BCCI to pay their compensation or lose out on hosting 2023 World Cup

The International Cricket Council or the ICC has asked Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to compensate Rs 160 crore (USD 23 million) which they suffered as tax deduction during the 2016 World T20 hosted in India. The ICC wants BCCI to pay the amount before December 31 or lose out on hosting the 2021 Champions Trophy and 2023 50 overs Cricket World Cup.

The 2021 Champions Trophy and 2023 Cricket World Cup both are scheduled to be played in India and is currently under the cloud of doubt if BCCI fails to fulfill ICC’s demand. The official broadcaster of all ICC tournaments, Star TV, had deducted all taxes before paying the ICC for the 2016 World T20 and the global body wants to recover the money through the Indian board. And if BCCI is unable to pay the amount ICC will deduct it from India’s revenue share for the current fiscal year.

BCCI is currently busy with its cash rich T20 tournament, Indian Premier League scheduled to be hosted in March next year for which it conducted the auction recently.

IPL 2019 auction finished on December 18 in Jaipur with every team buying their players in a fixed amount they were allotted by the BCCI. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and Jaydev Unadkat going for the highest bid in the auction with Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals buying the respective players for 8.4 crores each.

In the auction there were many surprises after Brendon McCullum was unsold while uncapped Indian player Varun Chakravarthy from Tamil Nadu who played in Tamil Nadu Premier League for Madurai Panthers and was sold for 8.4 crores that 42 times higher than his base price. He was sold to Kings XI Punjab.

Another expensive buy was Jaydev Unadkat, who was also sold for 8.4 crores to Rajasthan Royals, while Mohammed Shami was sold for 4.8 crores to Kings XI Punjab.

Shimron Hetmyer and Carlos Braithwaite is the most expensive players sold till now in the 2019 IPL auction being held at Jaipur, Hetmyer was purchased by Royal challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders took Braithwaite in their team. Yuvraj Singh left unsold but was later bought by Mumbai Indians for 1 crore, while Hanuma Vihari was sold for 2 crores to Delhi Capitals. The shock has come for the cricket lovers in the country after no team opted for Yuvraj who had a bad season last year. Axar Patel who played for Kings XI Punjab last year was purchased by Delhi Capital for 5 crores this year.
