Veteran actor and screenwriter Girish Karnad passes away; end of an era in Indian literature, cinema
The veteran actor, screenwriter, and playwriter, Girish Karnad passed away in the morning at Bengaluru. He passed away at the age of 81. He has been a part of several Hindi hit films and also some famous theater plays. He was last seen in Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai, in which he had played the role of Salman Khan's RAW chief.
He wrote his first play Yayati (1961) when he was studying in Oxford. The play was critically acclaimed and it was centred on the story of a mythological king. Then Karnad wrote his next play, Tughlaq (1964), tells the story of the 14th century Sultan Muhammad Bin Tughlaq. It was one of his best work.
Girish Karnad has written several plays in Kannada and is considered one of the Kannada literature's foremost playwriters. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1974 and in Padma Bhushan in 1992. He was also awarded the Janpith Award, India's highest literary prize in 1991 for his contribution to literature and theater.
Let us tell you that during the Karnataka Police's investigation into Gauri Lankesh's murder case, they found that Girish Karnad was on the first in the hit list of a far-right conspiracy. Karnad was born on 19th May, 1938 in Maharashtra and he got his Bachelor's degree from Karnataka University in 1958. Then he proceeded to study at Oxford where he got M.A. degree in 1963. Now he is survived by his wife Saraswathi, son of Raghu Karnad, a journalist and writer and daughter Radha, a Kenya based doctor.
