Bollywood's iconic Sharmila Tagore was born on December 8, 1944. On Thursday, she turned 73. Sharmila, who had her own identity in Bollywood, was one of the finest films of 'Aradhana', 'Mausam', 'Chupke-Chupke', 'Safar' and was born in Hyderabad.
In 1959, under the direction of Satyajit Ray, she stepped into the acting world with the Bengali film 'Apur Sansar'.
With Shammi Kapoor, she got the chance to work in 'Kashmir Ki Kali', which made her a star. After this, she also worked with Shakti Samanta in several super hit films like 'Aradhana' and 'An Evening in Paris'. Shakti Samant made a pair of Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore that created a magic on screen.
In 1967, 'An Evening In Paris', Sharmila Tagore wore a bikini. That was not an easy thing at that time. By the time the film was released, Sharmila got engaged with Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and it was believed that family of Pataudi were not happy with Sharmila and their relations were on verge of collapse but that did not happen.
After marriage, she adopted Islam and changed her name to Ayesha Sultana. In 1968, she underwent a photoshoot in Bikini for Filmfare Magazine. However, when she was declared as the CBFC chairperson, she had expressed concern over the use of bikini in the films.
Sharmila has also received two National Awards and two Filmfare Awards. In 2013, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government.
