The Democratic People's Republic of Korea marked the 80th birth anniversary of late leader Kim Jong Il with a concert, fireworks and an outdoor ceremony near its border with China, state media reported Wednesday, as the hermit kingdom calls for greater internal unity amid pandemic.

The celebration displayed participants' determination to rally behind Kim Jong Un and secure well-being with self-reliance, KCNA said, and akin events were organised across North Korea to mark the birth anniversary.
