Nobel Prize 2018: Nadia Murad, an ISIS rape survivor and Denis Mukwege win Nobel Peace Prize

Iraq born Nadia Murad is one of the 3,000 Yazidi victims of rape and abuses by ISIS. Congo's 63-year-old gynaecologist Dr Denis Mukwege has repeatedly condemned impunity for mass rape.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said the two were given the award “for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict,” reported The NewYork Times.

The pair both made a "crucial contribution to focusing attention on and combating, such as war crimes," Ms Reiss-Andersen, the Nobel committee chair added.

"A more peaceful world can only be achieved if women and their fundamental rights and security are recognised and protected in war," she said.

Denis is well known as "Doctor Miracle." He is an outspoken critic of the abuse of women during war who has described rape as "a weapon of mass destruction."
