Hossain appointed as Bangladesh CJ

Hossain appointed as Bangladesh CJ (ANI)

Syed Mahmud Hossain has been appointed Chief Justice of Bangladesh barely three months after Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned from the post.

President Md Abdul Hamid administered the oath for Hossain as the 22nd chief justiceof the Supreme Court in Dhaka.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, senior members of her cabinet, top judges and law">lawyers of the Supreme Court, among others, were present at the oath-taking ceremony

The chief justice's office fell vacant after Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned in November last year, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Sinha's resignation came six weeks after he went on a leave in October

Justice Miah was made the acting chief justice after Justice Sinha went abroad on leave.

Hours after the appointment of the new chief justice, Justice Miah resigned apparently for not being chosen to be the top judge, according to the reports.

Justice Miah was set to retire on Nov 10 this year, while Justice Hossain in December 2021.

Born on Dec 31, 1954, Hossain started practicing law">law in 1981 and two years later went on to practice in the High Court.
