United States President Donald Trump on 13 December congratulated Democrat Doug Jones for winning the Senate election in Alabama.
"Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!" President Trump tweeted.

Jones victory is a major setback for President Trump, who defeated Republican Roy Moore. Democrat Jones became the first member of his party to win a Senate seat in the state since 1992.
Moore, who was abandoned by the fellow Republicans after several allegations surfaced that he had sexual relationships with underage girls when he was in his 30s.
Jones' victory will narrow the Senate Republican majority to 51-49. His term lasts until January 2021.
