Who is Wimbledon's new sensation Emma Raducanu

Britain’s new tennis sensation Emma Raducanu triumphed over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 7-5, to get to her first ever round of 16 at Wimbledon.

The teenager has gone on to become the youngest British woman to reach the second week in the tournament in the Open Era.


Earlier, the 18-year-old defeated Vitalia Diatchenko and Marketa Vondrousova in the first two rounds of the tournament respectively.

Here’s a look at her impressive journey.

Emma Raducanu was ranked 338th ahead of the start of the week. She made her WTA Tour main draw debut at the Nottingham Open 2021, where she got entry as a wildcard. The teenager suffered the loss against Harriet Dart in the competition. Earlier in June, Emma Raducanu got to her first ever main draw at the Wimbledon as a wildcard entrant.

Wimbledon 2021: A look at her journey

The British teenager beat Russia's Diatchenko in her maiden Wimbledon match. Radubanu won a victory over the Russian in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-0. She then got the better of Czech Republic's Vondrousova, 6-2, 6-4, getting to be the youngest British woman to get to the Wimbledon third round since Elena Baltacha in 2002.

Raducanu also went on to become the youngest British woman to reach the Round of 16 in the Wimbledon since 1959.

Emma Raducanu was the lowest ranked player in the whole women’s draw. The 18-year-old’s third-round victory over Cirstea guarantees her a place in Top 200 (175th) in the WTA Rankings. As a matter of fact, She can go up to the 130s if she prevails in her next match.

The teenager is the only child of Romanian (father) and Chinese (mother) parents. Coming from Toronto, she has been staying in South London for the last 16 years. Currently, Raducanu is coached by Nigel Sears.

Furthermore, she is a member of the Lawn Tennis Association's Pro Scholarship Programme in Britain. Emma Raducanu will now go head to head against Ajla Tomljanovic in the Round of 16 match.

The teenager will now lockhorns with Ajla Tomljanovic, who got the better of former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko on Saturday. If Raducanu wins, she could come face to face with world number one Ashleigh Barty in the quarter-finals.

 

Not long ago, Emma Raducanu stated "This is my first year here and I'm just having such a blast. I'm at the beginning of my career and I have many more years to come”.
