The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has given recognition to the All India Tennis Association (AITA), a year after the tennis governing body's renewal as a National Sports Federation (NSF) was declined.
The AITA's recognition was put on hold due to non-compliance with the contentious Sports Code.
The Sports ministry was disagreed by the AITA's decision to continue with the then chief Anil Khanna rather than conducting new elections.
The ministry had asked Khanna to quit, saying that his election as president in 2012 after serving two consecutive terms as general secretary was against the Sports Code that bars officials from re-election after serving two consecutive terms of four years.
After Khanna stepped down from the post in 2016, the AITA elected former Indian Revenue Service officer Praveen Mahajan as the new chief of the body during an Executive Committee meeting in December last year.
Mahajan's appointment as a president till 2020 was later confirmed in AITA's Special General Meeting (SGM) in February this year.
