British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton clarifies after facing backlash on twitter for his 'Poor India' comment

F1 champion Lewis Hamilton recently hit the controversial track when he critisized India and called it a poor place. Hamilton visited India in 2011 for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix.

Lewis questioned the decision of Formula One's policy of organising races in new countries, after they confirmed Vietnam as their next country to hold F1.

Lewis while critisizing India, said that the track was built in the middle of nowhere. However Lewis clarified his comments on India by saying that, "India maybe the fastest growing economy but it also has a lot of poverty, my reference was that a Grand Prix there felt strange to drive past homeless people and then arrive in a huge arena where money was not an issue".

At the inaugural Indian Grand Prix, Hamilton recorded the second-fastest time in qualifying, but was penalised three places on the starting grid, after a yellow-flag infraction in Friday practice.

Lewis Hamilton currently races for Mercedes AMG Petronas and is on the first position with 363 points.

Formula One was last held in India in 2013 at Greater Noida's Buddh International Circuit, where Sebastian Vettel of Germany won the race. The inaugural race was held in 2011 and was also won by Vettel.
