The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 8 January named Anupam Mallik as its candidate from the Lok Sabha constituency of Uluberia and Sandeep Banerjee from the Legislative Assembly constituency of Naopara for the upcoming by-elections in the state.
Mallik is the party's Howrah (rural) district president.
By-elections were necessary from the seats after the demise of the sitting representatives from both the places last year.
Naopara MLA Madhusudhan Ghose died after a protracted illness due to cancer in August, while Uluberia MP Sultan Ahmed died of cardiac arrest in September.
The by-election in the state is going to be held on January 29 and the counting of the votes will be done on 1 February.
