Tripura king's son approaches Supreme Court seeking NRC in the state; Congress' Salman Khurshid to represent him

After the implementation of National Register for Citizenship in Assam as per the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, the son of the Tripura king Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya has approached the apex court seeking to implement NRC in Tripura.

The King’s son has filed a writ petition in the court, although a similar petition was filed earlier on October 8 demanding the NRC in Tripura. It was filed by a forum known as Tripura People’s Front. The Supreme Court has earlier issued a notice to the Center demanding a reply on the matter.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer and Congress leader Salman Khurshid will represent the petition in the case filed by the Kirit Bikram.

Debbarman, working president of the Tripura Congress, said there cannot be “different rules for different states” in India when it comes to the citizenship, as reported by The Indian Express.

He added that the demand of a separate state could be negated if NRC gets implemented. “Implement NRC and the demand for a separate state will dilute, people demanding Tipraland are doing so because they feel they have lost all rights within the state of Tripura.”

Debbarman was appointed as the secretary of the All India Congress for Sikkim recently. He even said that it was the Supreme Court’s prerogative to decide upon the cut-off date in the matter and as a citizen of this country, everyone would be bound to follow it.

The NRC was earlier brought in Assam and the BJP is counting upon the vote bank of several regional party’s like All India Trinamool Congress and the Congress, where the Bengali Muslims, who belong to Bangladesh have become a constant vote base of the party.
