Prime Minister Narendra Modi has got a place in America's news magazine Time for its 20th May 2019 edition. The magazine has not just given him place but also has called him 'India's divider in chief'. The magazine has a cover story of PM Modi, asking, “Can the World’s Largest Democracy Endure Another Five Years of a Modi Government?”
Journalist Aatish Taseer talks about populism in democracies like Turkey, Brazil, Britain, the US and India. The article that has written on the current issue of democracy opens with a line, “Of the great democracies to fall to populism, India was the first.”
“nation’s most basic norms, such as the character of the Indian state, its founding fathers, the place of minorities and its institutions, from universities to corporate houses to the media, were shown to be severely distrusted.” the story reads under Prime Minister Modi.
“…Under Modi, minorities of every stripe – from liberals and lower castes to Muslims and Christians – have come under assault,” the magazine reads. Targetting at the promises made by PM Modi in general elections 2014, the writer says“Not only has Modi’s economic miracle failed to materialise, he has also helped create an atmosphere of poisonous religious nationalism in India.”
Meanwhile, the journalist also writes the current scenario of the general elections 2019 by saying how Modi is lucky to be blessed with so weak opposite-a ragtag coalition of parites, led by Congress with no big agenda to defeat him. Let us tell you that Modi had appeared on TIME coverpage in 2015 after winning the last elections in 2014. He even featured on the magazine in 2012 after he repeatedly became Gujarat CM.
