As the Central government failed to implement the Supreme Court ruling over Cauvery water issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Eadappadi K Palanisamy and his deputy O Pannerselvam has gone on day-long hunger strike demanding for setting up of Cauvery management board.

The hunger strike has been called by AIADMK. The party and state police are in surprise after chief minister and his deputy went on the strike.

Palanisamy and Panneerselvam reached the venue – Chepauk near Marina Beach around 8 am. They were not on the list of leaders participating in the hunger strike. Their participation has come in the backdrop of opposition parties holding protest across the state.

Tamil Nadu’s ruling party AIADMK’s hunger strike called it betrayal as the Centre is not forming the Cauvery Water Management Board. The Supreme Court’s order of forming the board on the Cauvery dispute ended on March 29.

As per media reports, around twenty one lakh shops across the state are holding protest against the Central government for defying  the Supreme Court’s order by not forming the Cauvery Management Board. Traffic was disrupted on the Wallajah Road because of the hunger strike at Chepauk.

The party demands that the Modi government must set up Management Board and the Cauvery water and safeguard the interests of the state.

Earlier on Monday, two DMK workers reportedly made an attempt to self-immolate in Coimbatore while a state-wide stir was on for setting up CBM to implement the Supreme Court’s verdict.

The Chief Justice of India on Monday said the court will solve issues of Tamil Nadu.
