Days after Bhuj strip check row, where at least 68 girls forced to remove their undergarments to prove they weren’t menstruating, another case has come to light from Gujarat’s Surat. On Thursday, 20 February, female trainee clerks of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) were also forced to stand naked at a state-run hospital for a medical test.
As per the reports of TOI, the lady doctor subjected them to a gynecological finger test and asked personal questions.
The shocking incident came to light after complaint lodged by the SMC Employees Union with the municipal commissioner. As per the complaint, around 100 employees got shocked when they reached the Surat Municipal Insititute of Medical Education and Research for their mandatory fitness test.
“Female employees were forced to stand naked together in groups of around 10 in a room where they did not have any privacy. The door was not properly closed and the only thing blocking the view from outside was a curtain,” said a senior SMC employee in whom one of the women confided.
Besides the virginity test, unmarried women were allegedly asked if they had ever been pregnant. Some women trainees also accused the lady doctor of behaving rudely with them.
On the other hand, male trainees had to undergo a normal fitness test that includes ENT, heart and lung tests, eye tests, besides an overall check-up.
The fitness test is the mandatory procedure for confirmation of a candidate after the completion of a three year probation period.
