Amidst the tussle in the CBI and its directors, the government has appointed Sanjay Mishra, a 1984 batch IRS officer, as the interim director of the Enforcement Directorate.
The governments move comes after the term of Karnal Singh got over and there were speculations that he might get an extension but the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has selected Sanjay Mishra to be the chief.
Mishra, is infamous for probing high profile cases which include the National Herald case of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, the NDTV tax evasion case among others.
Sanjay Mishra is currently posted with the Income Tax department. As per sources, he is said to be close to the top BJP functionaries and his appointment is a message by the government that amid the crisis in the CBI, a strong face will lead this agency and Mishra fits the space and the narrative perfectly.
It was Mishra who probed the case of disproportionate assets against the Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati. Also, he investigated the case in which tax evasion allegations were made against the NDTV, and issued Rs 450 crore notice that the channel had received way back in 2004.
Mishra presently serves as the Commissioner with Division 4 of the Income Tax department as reported by The Quint.
Mishra has also served in Ahmedabad and has done stints in the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Enforcement Directorate. Outgoing chief Karnal Singh had got an extension of three months but in October 2016, the court granted a full two years term to him, which ended today.
