A 39-year-old woman, Kanaka Durga who entered the Ayyapa shrine at Kerala’s Sabarimala, was thrown out of her house by her in-laws has returned home after courts order. The woman entered the temple in defiance of religious customs after the Supreme Court’s verdict of allowing women of menstrual age to enter the temple has returned home after a local court order said that she should be allowed to stay at her husband's home.
Kanaka Durga, one of the two women who entered Sabarimala on 2 January, entered her in-law's house yesterday in Malappuram district after the court allowed her to stay at her in-law's house. She was earlier allegedly assaulted by her mother-in-law for entering, reported news agency ANI.
The local court in north Kerala’s Malappuram issued an interim order on Tuesday after Kanaka Durga's petition saying that she had the right to stay at her husband's home.
"I'm happy that I managed to enter the house with a court order. The children are not with me. I hope they will be with me the next time. I don't have any issues with sharing this house with my in-laws, but they have moved out because they have an issue. All these issues will be sorted in the long run." Kanaka said media.
Kanaka Durga says, "I got the court order&I could enter my house. I'm happy. I could not see my children today, but I hope I can see them next time. Kanaka Durga had filed a complaint with the district officials after her in-laws locked her out of the house last month. After she was thrown out of her home, she had to move to a government shelter under police protection.
The local court will hear the case next on March 11. Kanaka Durga and another woman, 39-year-old Bindu Ammini, were the first ones of menstrual age to enter the famous hilltop shrine in decades after Supreme Court lifted the ban from the entry of women in their menstrual age.
