A 30-year-old married woman, who was allegedly raped and set ablaze on April 6 in Rajasthan’s Barmer district, has succumbed to injuries at a government hospital in Jodhpur yesterday. Police have arrested the accused man who had been absconding after committing the heinous crime.

The body of the deceased will be handed over to the family for the last rites after conducting the autopsy.

As per the FIR lodged by the victim’s husband, his wife was alone at the home after he left for work and their children were in school. The accused, identified as Shakur Khan, entered the house and raped the woman. When the neighbours heard her screams and reached the house, Khan poured some acid-like inflammable chemical on the victim, set her on fire, and fled the scene, pushing the neighbours aside.

The mother of two children suffered 40-50 percent burn injuries. She was rushed to a government hospital in Balotra and was later referred to a medical hospital in Jodhpur after initial treatment.

According to the police, Shakur Khan hails from the same village as the woman. He was arrested by police yesterday night.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of Parliament (MP) and Union Minister of agriculture and farmers welfare, Kailash Choudhary, condemned the incident and slammed CM Ashok Gehlot-led Government.

“The incident of raping a Dalit married woman in Balotra and burning her with acid is a black spot on Rajasthan along with the entire region and evidence of poor law and order situation in the state,” he said.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
