After the formation of an alliance of Congress and Janata Dal-United (JDS), HD Kumaraswamy was chosen as the leader of the new merger and he took oath on 23 May as new Karnataka CM. Since then both the allies were discussing the distribution of ministries and appointing ministers. There was a conflict on the name of Congress leader DK Shivakumar, who wanted to be appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka State. He played a critical role during the crisis of floor test he saved the MLAs of his party from being poached by BJP leaders. Desperate to prove their majority, falling from the short margin.
Later on, speaking with Rahul Gandhi, Shivkumar agreed with taking two ministries, he is likely to take the responsibility of irrigation ministry along with medical education as the second ministry.
Along with the name of DK Shivkumar, the name of KJ George and Priyanka Kharge has been also finalised. The discussion on the names happened in a meeting with several senior Karnataka Leaders and it was coordinated by Rahul Gandhi.
The Janata Dal-United (JDS) and the Chief Minister were opposing the decision of appointing a second deputy chief minister of the state after the name G Parameshwar of Congress was finalised as the deputy chief minister of the state.
Earlier there were speculations that HD Kumaraswamy could be compensated with the post of Karnataka Congress Chief but he wanted to be appointed as deputy chief minister of the state. Congress will have 22 ministers in the 33-member cabinet.
