Pranab Mukherjee on ventilator support after brain clot surgery

Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has been put on ventilator support following a surgery to remove a clot in his brain on Monday, sources asid. Hours ahead of the surgery, Pranab Mukherjee, 84, stated that he had also tested positive for coronavirus.

“On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID 19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19,” Mukherjee said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, the former President is at the Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) Hospital in the national capital, and his condition continues to remain critical, the sources said. Mukherjee, who was not very well, had been moved to hospital on the advice of doctors, and had tested positive for Covid-19 before the surgery.

The official Twitter handle of Rashtrapati Bhavan stated that President Ram Nath Kovind had talked to Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee, and had asked about his condition. “The President wished him a speedy recovery and good health,” the tweet read.

BJP leader Rajnath Singh had paid a visit to the hospital in the evening. Rahul Gandhi also took to his Twitter handle and posted, “Wishing former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee a speedy recovery.”

In 2014, the former President had gone through a cardiac procedure.

Many political leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and BS Yediyurappa, have tested positive for coronavirus in recent past.
