Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the strategic Sela Tunnel project to the nation during a virtual event held in Itanagar on Saturday.
Foundation Stone Laying and Construction
The foundation stone of the tunnel was laid by Prime Minister Modi on February 09, 2019, and construction commenced on April 1 of the same year.
Timely Completion Despite Challenges
Despite facing challenges posed by difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions, the tunnel project was completed in just five years.
Construction Details
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) undertook the construction of the tunnel at an altitude of 13,000 feet. It is situated on the road connecting Tezpur, Assam, to Tawang in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Strategic Importance and Connectivity
Built at a total cost of Rs 825 crore, the Sela Tunnel aims to provide all-weather connectivity to Tawang across Sela Pass on the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang Road. This infrastructure boost will enhance the preparedness of the armed forces and contribute to the socio-economic development of the border region.
Prime Minister Modi's Address at the Event
In his address during the event "Viksit Bharat Viksit North East," Prime Minister Modi emphasized the government's 'unwavering commitment' to the development of the Northeast region.
Government's Vision for Northeast Development
Highlighting the significance of the Sela Tunnel, Prime Minister Modi stated that it would improve all-weather connectivity and ease travel for the people of Tawang. He also mentioned that ongoing work on many such tunnels in the northeast region is a part of the government's comprehensive development plan for the area.
