India and Pakistan Armies fought the Kargil War in the year 1999 (May-July) in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. 26 July 1999 was the day when India defeated Pakistan and the Kargil war finally ended.
The war began in May 1999, after the reports of infiltrators atop heights of Kargil districts of Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control (LOC) surfaced. The war went on for two months. It is also referred as Operation Vijay, which was the name of the Indian operation, to clear the Kargil sector.
26 July is observed as 'Vijay Diwas' in honour of the Kargil War Heroes.

Year-1999
May 4: Reports of infiltrators atop heights of Kargil came.
May 5-15: Army patrol sent up to survey the situation. Captain Saurabh Kalia went missing.
May 26: IAF launched air strikes.
May 27: An IAF MiG-27 went down. Pilot was taken as a prisoner of war by Pakistan
May 31: The then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee confirmed it was a “war-like situation” in Kargil
June 10: Pakistan returned mutilated bodies of six soldiers which got India enraged.
June 12: Deadlock at first crisis-time meeting between foreign ministers Jaswant Singh and Sartaj Aziz in Delhi. Aziz was told that intruders must leave.
June 15: The then US President Bill Clinton urged the then Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif to withdraw troops from Kargil
June 29: Army captured two important posts near Tiger Hill
July 4: Tiger Hill captured. Nawaz Sharif met Clinton in Washington
July 5: Sharif announced pullout of Pakistani troops from Kargil
July 11: Pakistan began the pullout.
July 14: India declared operation Vijay a success.
July 26: Kargil war came to an end. India announced complete eviction of Pakistani troops.
