These high-rise towers were built by violating many building norms and now buildings are being demolished following the directives from the Supreme Court.

Noida Twin Towers, which are even taller than Qutub Minar, are all set to be demolished today at 2.30 pm. These towers will be razed to the ground after being found to have been built illegally. The Twin Towers are located in Sector 93A of Noida

Why are the twin towers being demolished?

These high-rise towers were built by violating many building norms and now buildings are being demolished following the directives from the Supreme Court. This demolition will put an end to the decade-long battle between the builder group – Supertech and the residents around the twin towers.

Explosives

More than 3,500 kgs of explosives, filled in over 9,000 holes, will be used to pull down the high-rise towers. If all goes according to plan, the towers will fall in seconds like a pack of cards.

The towers will be brought down using a demolition technique called implosion. The building structure that supports Ceyane and Apex will have holes drilled into particular locations, and these holes will be filled with explosives. The series of explosions will start from the ground floor and will end on the top floor.

Traffic

Police have issued a traffic advisory following which traffic will be restricted on major Noida routes. ‘Green corridors’ have been created to facilitate the movement of ambulances and other emergency service vehicles.

  • Routes leading to Noida’s twin towers will be detoured till evening.
  • Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will be closed today between 2 pm to 3 pm.
  • Traffic from Noida to Greater Noida through Yamuna Expressway will be diverted to sector 37. The traffic will be routed through Noida City Centre and Sector 71.
  • Traffic from Greater Noida to Delhi/Noida will be detoured from Pari Chowk to Surajpur.
  • Ahead of the demolition, traffic coming from the Yamuna Expressway/Greater Noida to Noida/Delhi will be completely shut down in front of the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and the Service Road at Noida Sector 132.

Demolition Preparation

Over 400 police personnel, apart from NDRF and paramilitary teams, will be deployed near the demolition area. More than 150 traffic personnel will be on the roads to manage the traffic. Six ambulances and four fire tenders will be on standby mode. Police have created an explosion zone of upto 50 metres radius in which entry is restricted.

For the convenience of the commuters, Noida Traffic Police have also issued a helpline number – 9971009001.

After Demolition

After the demolition, a plume of dust will emerge. The time it takes for the dust to settle after demolition will depend on how quickly the wind blows. It is estimated that 55,000 tonnes of debris will be produced, and it may take three months to clear it.
