In a horrifying incident, in a wee hour, a part of foot overbridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station collapsed on Thursday evening, killing 6 and leaving around 36 people injured. Injured were immediately rushed to Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital and St. George hospital. The bridge was managed by BMC and was under maintenance.
The incident took place near The Times of India building and the Anjuman Islam College, near CST railway station at around 7:35 pm.
Out of six casualties, three are women, identified as 35-year-old Apoorva Prabhu, 40-year-old Ranjana Tambe, and 35-year-old Sarika Kulkarni. The other three are 32-year-old Zahid Shiraj Khan, 55-year-old Mohan G Kaygunde and 35-year-old Tapendra Singh. Out of 36 injured, 2 are critical.

An FIR has been filed in connection with Mumbai bridge collapse, against concerned officials of Central Railway and BMC officials at the Azad Maidan Police Station under section 304A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has also promised or a high-level inquiry and promised strict action.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish over the Mumbai bridge incident. "Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to the foot overbridge accident in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Wishing that the injured recover at the earliest. The Maharashtra Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected," the PM tweeted.
Reacting to the incident, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that he is pained to hear about the tragedy and called it unfortunate. CM has announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 Lakh each will be given to the families of those who died in the incident and compensation of Rs 50,000 each will be given to the injured.
