Mumbai: In a shocking incident, the Mumbai Crime Branch apprehended three individuals, including a couple, accused of selling their own children to fund their drug addiction. The arrests took place in Andheri.
The Accused Individuals
The arrested individuals include Shabbir and Sania Khan, the parents involved in selling their children, and Shakeel Makrani. Additionally, Usha Rathod, an alleged agent who facilitated the sale and took a commission, was also detained by the Crime Branch.
Background of the Accused Couple
Shabbir and Sania Khan, both struggling with drug addiction, resorted to selling their two children to sustain their habit. The couple's family became aware of the situation, leading to the exposure of this distressing case.
Financial Transactions
According to Daya Nayak, a spokesperson for the Mumbai Crime Branch, the accused couple sold their two-year-old son for Rs 60,000 and their one-month-old daughter for Rs 14,000. The desperation for money to feed their addiction drove them to such extreme measures.
Cases Registered Against the Accused
The Mumbai Police have registered a case against Shabbir and Sania Khan, Usha Rathod, and Shakeel Makrani. The charges include child trafficking and endangering the welfare of minors.
Involvement of an Alleged Agent
Usha Rathod, the alleged agent who facilitated the transactions, is now under investigation. The police are working to identify the individuals to whom the children were sold.
Discovery of the Crime
The incident came to light when Rubina Khan, Shabbir's sister, discovered the shocking truth. Disturbed by her brother's actions, she promptly reported the incident to the D.N. Nagar police station.
Filing of Complaint
Rubina Khan filed a formal complaint against her brother and sister-in-law, prompting the D.N. Nagar police to register a case. Subsequently, the investigation was handed over to the Mumbai Crime Branch.
