Modi government is saffronising Indian cricket team: Congress leader

It is being said that the Indian cricket team will wear orange jersey in a World Cup match against England. Earlier the speculations were that team India will wear orange jersey against Afghanistan and England, but they played in their usual blue when they came out on the field against Afghanistan.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had asked all full member cricket boards to choose two different coloured kits for all the televised ICC events, except for the host country. Whereas only four teams have worn their away jersey in the ongoing World Cup so far and six teams including India chose not to. So it is possible that team India might come out in their usual blue jersey against England as well.

Now, politics in India has already started over the orange hypothetical jersey. Indian politicians from Congress and Samajwadi Party have opposed to the orange jersey and blamed the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party of saffronising team India as well.

Abu Asim Azmi, a Samajwadi Party MLA, suggested that the government was behind the decision and said that the jersey was part of growing saffronisation in the country.

“Modi ji wants to saffronise the entire country. A Muslim was the one who designed the Indian Tricolour. There are other colours in the Tricolour, why choose only orange? It will be better if their jersey is based on the Tricolour," Azmi was quoted as saying by India Today.

If the rumours are to be believed, the Indian cricket team will wear the orange jersey for their 7th match of the Cricket World Cup against England on June 30. India has won all their matches in the tournament so far and will look to continue the winning streak when they meet West Indies on June 27.
