MDH Masala owner Mahashay Dharampal Gulati passes away at 98

The owner of MDH Masala, Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, passed away earlier today.

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, famously known as the ‘Masala King’, or ‘King of Spices’ was the founder of MDH (Mahshian Di Hatti), one of India's biggest spice brand.

According to reports, the 98-year-old was receiving treatment at a hospital for the past three weeks. He suffered a heart attack early Thursday.

Dharampal Gulati was born in 1919 in Pakistan’s Sialkot, However, after partition his family moved to India. In 1953, Gulati rented a shop in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, and named it Mahashiyan Di Hatti (MDH), and started selling spices.

The company officially got going in 1959 when Gulati bought a land and started a manufacturing unit. Currently, known as MDH, which reportedly makes around 50 different varieties of spices, has 15 factories across India and puts on sale its products across the world, according to reports. Dharampal Gulati became highest-paid FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) CEO in India in 2017.

In 2019, Dharampal Gulati was adorned with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award.
