A village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura was on the boil after residents of Khushipura Tiraha village thrashed a man, accusing him of smuggling cattle meat on Monday.

The horrifying incident happened around 9 pm when a truck carrying animal carcasses overturned on Chhatikara Radhakund Road near Mathura’s Khushipura Tiraha.

When the truck overturned, the remains spilled out, infuriating the locals who thought it to be cattle meat. They blocked the road and regardless of appeals by police, they refused to move.

Apprehensive about the situation turning violent, two persons travelling in the truck made an attempt to run away. However, one of them was caught.

The angry crowd then beat him up before handing him over to the police. The locals demanded action against the alleged cattle meat smuggler. A video of the horrifying incident went viral.

As maintained by the locals, an SUV, which was driving in front of the truck, was keeping a watch. But it sped away as soon as the accident took place. CO Sadar Praveen Malik said the person who was held told the police that he was transporting the remains from Neemgaon in Govardhan to Saharanpur. “The carcasses will be sent for testing,” he said.

When news of the incident spread, people, claiming to be ‘gaurakshaks’, arrived at Khushipura and called for the arrest of the other man.

SP Martand Prakash said: “The blockade has been removed and the carcasses lying on the road have been taken away. The arrested person is being interrogated. The one who ran away would soon be in our custody.”
