As the protest over the Citizenship Amendment Bill has taken a toll in the Northeast, legendary filmmaker of Manipur, Aribam Shyam Sharma has returned the Padma Shri award which he received in 2006.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill is being seen as an anti-Muslim scheme wherein, immigrants from Aghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan will get citizenship irrespective of their religion, except Muslims.
As per NorthEast Now, “When Manipuri cinema was struggling to get its identity as a distinctive art form, Aribam Syam Sharma brought the Manipuri cinema on the International map through his epoch-making films like “Imagi Ningthem” ( My Son, My Precious, 1981), “Ishanou”,“Sangai –The Dancing Deer” , “Lamja Parshuram” and “Olangthagee Wangmadasoo” (Even Beyond the Summer Horizon).”
