A 32-year-old man was arrested on April 6 in connection with the murder and rape case of an 85-year-old woman in an agricultural field in Karnataka’s Hassan district.

According to police, the incident took place on April 1 when the elderly woman had gone to her agricultural field in Arsikere taluk’s Erehalli village. When the woman didn’t return home, the family members filed a missing complaint with a police station on April 2.

Acting on the complaint, police initiated a search operation in the area and found the naked body of the elderly in a scheduled place near her field. The woman’s head was smashed with a big stone.

During the probe, police found that a man on his bike was wandering near the crime spot three days ago. When the cops detained and questioned the man, he confessed to the crime.

The accused was identified as 32-year-old Mithun Kumar.

Police said that when the elderly woman was returning to home after visiting her field, which is 2 kilometers from her house, Kumar offered to drop. Since the victim knew the accused, she boarded the bike.

Mithun Kumar took her to the nearby field and tried to rape her. When the woman resisted, he thrashed, smashed her head with a big stone. The elderly woman died on the spot. The accused then raped her after she died, police said.

“Initially, we had no clues about the miscreant. But we knew the accused must be nearby and managed to arrest him,” the Hindustan times quoted Arsikere Rural Police Station Inspector Raghavendra Prakash as saying.

Police have registered a case against the accused under IPC 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) and investigating that whether the accused is involved in similar crime in the district or not.

Further investigation is underway.
