In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old nursing student fell unconscious while playing a game tug-of-war at his college in Thane at annual sports day on Friday. The deceased identified as Jibin Sunny was a second-year student at KJ Somaiya College of Nursing, Vidyavihar in Mumbai. He collapsed at 11 am in the middle of the game.
Sunny was immediately rushed to the nearby Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. An accidental death case has been registered at Tilak Nagar police. The police said Jibin seemed healthy and had no history of illnesses.
Doctors have done with post morterm that revealed Jibin had an enlarged heart and an injury near the brain’s occipital lobe (at the back of the head).
“Jibin had breakfast at home, in Thane’s Wagle Estate, before taking part in the sporting event,” said Sushil Kamble, a senior police inspector. Kamble said the cause of death was not yet clear. “We have reserved his viscera for a chemical analysis,” he said.
Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust, which runs the college, released an official statement condoling Jibin’s death. “It is a very unfortunate incident,” the Trust said.
According to jibin's relatives, his parents had planned to go back to the family’s village in Kerala with the body for the last rites. “We are waiting for relatives who live abroad to come to India. We will most likely go back Pathanamthitta, Kerala,” said James Paulose, one of Jibin’s relatives quoted saying HT.
