In a shocking incident, a 12-year-old girl lost her life due to her elder brother's grave misunderstanding and lack of knowledge of menstruation.

The minor girl, who lived with her 30-year-old elder brother and his wife in Maharashtra's Ulhasnagar, experienced her first menstruation, also known as menarche.

The brother, who worked as a security guard, mistakenly believed that the blood on his younger sister's clothes was evidence of her involvement in a sexual relationship.

It all began when the young girl had her first cycle. Her brother noticed bloodstains on her clothes and started questioning her about the stains, misinterpreting the situation. The 12-year-old was unable to answer her elder brother's harsh questions due to her lack of knowledge about menstruation, according to TOI.

Furious over not receiving proper replies, the man decided to punish the victim and began thrashing and torturing her. According to reports, the accused also used tongs to inflict severe burns on the victim's body.

For three days, the 12-year-old girl was kicked and punched by her brother, resulting in her deteriorating health. The victim was taken to a Central Hospital where she was declared brought dead by the doctors. The hospital staff informed the authorities who took the girl's body into custody and sent it for autopsy.

"He accused her of having an affair with someone," News 18 quoted senior inspector of Ulhasnagar police station Madhukar Kahd as saying. He also stated that the girl's body had visible signs of torture.

Police arrested the accused brother and registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC against him.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
